Core materials are used throughout the composites industry in order to fabricate stiff, yet lightweight composite products. These materials are produced in a variety of forms, including balsa wood and polyurethane foam which is what you see below. The use of core materials is also called sandwich construction. The proper use of these materials leads to thermal conductivity, sound insulation, and fire resistance.
