Awlgrip Gelcoat Priming Application

Awlgrip Topcoat, which also goes by the name of Awlgrip paint, is a polyester based high gloss polyurethane topcoat. When properly applied, the end result is long lasting gloss and color retention. It is considered by many to be among the best topside paints for the marine industry. It can be used as a gelcoat priming application. Here are those laid out to properly apply for gelcoat priming.

For new and sound aged gelcoat follow these steps:

  1. After cleaning, sand the entire surface until smooth.
  2. Blow off the surface with clean, dry compressed air while dry wiping with clean rags in order to remove sanding dust and residue.
  3. Wipe down surface with proper solvent.
  4. Apply specified number of coats with the appropriate overcoating interval between coats.

Depending on the application method and product, further priming might not be necessary. However, that is up to the individual project.

After these steps, then the surface is now ready for the final prime and Awlgrip topcoat. Here are the following steps for applying the Awlgrip final prime and topcoat properly. These are the steps for surfaces with heavily crazed, broken, delaminated, cracked gelcoat and raw laminating resin and epoxy coated/laminated wood.

  1. Any areas that have been previously ground out need to be primed. Two or three coats may be needed. Dry time is 12+ hours.
  2. Fill and fair as necessary. Allow for a cure time of 12+ hours. If polyester putties are used, then they should be kept to an absolute minimum. Only use polyester putties for pinholes and very slight scratches or dents. This is because polyester putties shrink and distort rapidly. The use of epoxy fillers is much more stable.
  3. Sand the entire surface smooth with grit paper. Effectively remove all of the gloss from the gelcoat, oxidized gelcoat and lightly crazed areas. Feather any dents or scratches. Do not sand excessively, because this will create porosity in the surface that will later need to be filled.
  4. Blow off the surface with clean, dry compressed air while dry wiping with clean rags in order to effectively remove sanding dust and other residue.
  5. Then prime the entire surface. Two coats may be needed. Cure time is 12+ hours.
  6. Sand the entire surface smooth again with proper grit paper.
  7. Blow off the surface with clean, dry compressed air while dry wiping with clean rags in order to remove sanding dust and residue.
  8. Wipe surface down using proper solvent.
  9. Apply the specified number of coats of the primer with the appropriate overcoating interval between coats.
