What Is Gelcoat Wax?

Gelcoat Wax SupplierGelcoat is a material that is used to provides a high-quality finish on the visible surface of any fiber-reinforced composite. The most common type of gelcoat is thermo-setting polymer. In short, gelcoats are modified resins that are then applied to molds in the liquid state. They are a popular material to use when restoring shine to older fiberglass, such as the finish of boats. No wax gelcoats are used when multiple layers of coats are used on a task. This speeds up the process, but eventually the last coat of gelcoat wax will need to have the wax in it, so make sure you have your bases covered before starting your next job.

Gelcoat Wax Selection

We have a few different gelcoat waxes to choose from in our inventory. These selections are broken down by the color of the gelcoat. These colors are:

  • Black
  • Light Grey
  • Marble Clear
  • White

We offer different colors because we understand that you may want to use gelcoats for different applications. So, sure, black and white gelcoat wax typically can go with any kind of setting, but we feel like choices are important. Perhaps one of our other options makes all of the difference! And if that difference is you looking for a gelcoat with no-wax, then we have that too!

How A Gel Coat Can Improve Your Boat's Performance

A gel coat is a protective coating that can be applied to the surface of boats, which provides superior protection for your vessel against the likes of UV damage, corrosion and, most notably, water damage. A gel coat is a tough, durable finish that allows a boat to look great for a long period of time. And it can also improve the performance of the boat, too.

How a gel coat on a boat works is that it is a polyester resin-based material, which is made up of pigments, additives, and other ingredients that form a barrier between the hull's substrate and the environment. Ultimately offering superior protection against ultraviolet rays and water absorption. The thickness of the gel coat can range from 0.5 millimeters to 4 millimeters depending on the use.

Applying Gel Coats to a Boat

Gel coating is usually applied in three steps, which are preparation, spraying, and finishing. When you start, you must prepare the surface. Properly preparing the surface happens by removing all of the dirt or other particles that may interfere with the adhesion. Then multiple layers of gel coat are sprayed onto the surface using special equipment, like with the use of an airless sprayer or a high-pressure spray gun with fine nozzles. Both of these application methods ensure a uniform coverage that spreads across the entire hull surface. Lastly, any remaining imperfections are polished away and the finishing touches are applied to achieve the desired look before drying completely overnight.
